Bye 2022!
2022 has been a great year for my photography.
I have completed at least 3 new series of images. Added new images to my portfolio and traveled a bit.
I have also been part of 2 group exhibitions (my first) and that was a huge learning curve with printing and hanging the images.
Here are some of my favorite images of 2022.
Looking forward to 2023 and working on storytelling in my landscape images.
Happy New Year!
Best Photography Month Ever!
And it’s not because I got any fog….
I had a busy few weeks getting some images gallery ready for two juried group exhibits.Having never done any of this before, I went full blast to absorb as much information as I could on printing, matting, framing and basically getting my images exhibit ready.
After dropping off 5 images at 2 galleries, I waited for the juried results. Having never done this before, I had low expectations,. So imagine my surprise when I had 1 image qualify for a group exhibit at the Mystic Museum of Art and 2 images qualify for a group exhibit at the Hygienic Art Gallery.
I was super excited!
I wasn’t able to attend the opening of my second group exhibition at the Mystic Museum of Art, but as soon as I do, I will update this blog.
Happy October!
Second Place
Was music to my ears as I placed in the Friends of The National Wildlife Refuges of Rhode Island 2022 Annual Amateur Photo Contest, Habitat category.
I was apprehensive to submit my photographs for the competition but I did it anyway. I ended up submitting 4 images and 1 placed. The photos are below.
Here are my thoughts on the images after seeing them printed in the exhibition.
While I really like the first 2 images personally, for a competition, I feel that they are not striking or interesting enough.
The third photo is of the annular solar eclipse and while I have fabulous memories of that day of photography, the image lacks that wow factor.
Interesting enough, I almost didn’t submit the last image on the right that placed into the competition.
I felt that it was too “in your face” even though I love the tree and stars above it.It was an image I got at a local dark sky location in September of 2021.
I was there to photograph the milky way and as I was leaving I happened to look up and saw hundreds of stars in the sky with the tree silhouette and decided to try and capture the image.
All this to say, don’t count yourself out!
Submit your photos for competitions, see your work printed and keep making images :)
Enders Island Sunrise
I am so lucky to live near the ocean. It comes with endless opportunities to capture birds and beautiful sunrises.
The image above was taken in the golden hour. Love that golden color!
Having my settings pre programmed into my camera enabled me to take the pictures with the birds before they flew off.
Having these settings ready to go has been a life saver since i started incorporating birds into my landscape images.
Point Judith Sunrise
It all begins with an idea.
It was a morning that my app predicted would have a beautiful sunrise. Now, i’ve been burned before. App says 89% chance of a beautiful sunrise, sunset, clear skies, no rain etc. and I get excited and my hoes are dashed. I though this would be one of those mornings.
A snowstorm was forecasted for 9am and sunrise was at 7am and I thought ’no way is this going to happen’, but I went anyway. When I got to the location, there were no clouds and the beginning of the sunrise was mediocre.
Right when I was going to call it quits, I saw a cloud moving quickly heading South and the sun rising right behind the lighthouse. I’d never seen anything like this before and I knew I had to get closer to the lighthouse.
I made my was on smooth uneven boulders to the front of the lighthouse and the clouds that were now right behind it seemed to catch fire as they continued on their way. I had never seen anything like it and haven’t since , but anytime I think about staying in when a beautiful sunrise is forecasted, I think of this morning.
